With SNAP cuts taking effect on November 1st, over 220 families in NICE’s direct care will face increased financial burdens.
SNAP, or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, provides food benefits to low-income individuals to help supplement their grocery bill in an effort to reduce poverty and improve health and economic outcomes.
Programs such as SNAP are an incredible aid on a family’s path to self-sufficiency; when you’re worried about how to get food on the table, other aspects of life such as work, school, or even health can take a backseat. Bridging the gap with SNAP helps adults focus on rising above poverty and creating a better life for themselves and their families. 1 in 10 Tennessee residents are enrolled in SNAP, with more than 66% of SNAP participants being families with children.
There are over 220 refugee families in NICE’s care that arrived in Middle Tennessee through the US Refugee Admissions Program last year. These families arrived with the hope of a safe and stable new beginning, only to be cut off from vital programs while they work hard towards self-sufficiency.
To help our clients weather the impact on urgent household expenses with these new cuts to food assistance, we’re looking to the Greater Nashville community for help. Each of NICE’s programs aims to help refugees and immigrants on their journey to self-sufficiency—through education, employment, social services, and more. By donating to NICE, you can help us relieve the burden of rising household expenses for these families in their time of great need.
No family should go hungry or wonder how they’ll pay rent—give the gift of hope today.
If you are in direct need of food assistance, there are resources available to help you find food in your area: Second Harvest Food Bank, Feeding America, and FindHelp.
