About the Project
Refugees in Nashville often struggle to find employment due to language, transportation, and childcare barriers. Not having a stable income creates significant hurdles that interfere with their ability to adjust to life in the United States. NICE Candles was created with the intention of improving the lives of these refugees by allowing people who experience barriers to traditional employment to make additional income. As this project continues to grow, we have adopted guiding principles to help us lead this endeavor. NICE Candles is committed to being refugee focused and catered, allowing freedom of expression and creativity. It is our goal to allow makers to form their own business practices, while we act as a resource. We ensure profits are returned to refugee makers and used to support NICE’s adult education department in providing entrepreneurship workshops in branding, financing and planning for a small business.
About the Maker
Our first NICE Candles maker is Sahro. Sahro is a refugee from Somalia who came to the United States in 2001, and became a citizen in 2008. She lives in South Nashville with her husband and their five children. Because Sahro’s goal is to own her own craftsman business, every candle is made with the intention of eventual self-sufficiency for her business. Eventually, the project will expand to include all refugees interested in starting an artisan craft business by holding classes and workshops. With your support in purchasing a NICE candle, our agency can support more refugees like Sahro to make artisan crafts and build a business.
